Program

Renovation and addition to an existing school building to create 50 one-bedroom apartments for congregate elderly housing, a School Readiness child day care center for 40 children and a community meeting space.

Population

Apartments are rented to the low income frail elderly. The child care center serves families with a mix of incomes.

Construction Cost

$4.7 million for the housing component; $400,000 for the child care component.

Funded By

Connecticut DECD loan, Federal Low Income Housing Tax Credit Syndication; Federal Home Loan Bank AHP Grant; and Connecticut Health and Educational Facilities Authority loan.

Status

Housing completed Spring 1997; Child care completed Fall 1998

Role of Becker + Becker

Becker + Becker provided all planning, development, syndication and architectural services, having successfully responded to a City RFP seeking creative proposals for re-use of the old school building.

The intergenerational program meets the needs of elderly and young children under one roof, addressing critical social needs of the community.
